Title

Correlation of Changes in Song Repertoire of the Male Yellow Warbler with Specific Periods of Nesting

Description

The nesting behavior and song repertoire cornposition of a pair of yellow warblers (Dendroica petechia) was studied in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan during the 1982 nesting season. The songs of one male were recorded using a variable speed tape recorder and parabolic receiver, slowed down to 3/20 of the original speed, and analyzed using a chart recorder. Three periods of nesting behavior were observed: 1) pre-nesting and incubation of eggs, 2) care of chicks after hatching, and 3) fledging of chicks from the nest. The male's repertoire was composed of four basic song types, and distinct changes in percent composition of the repertoire were correlated with each of these periods of nesting.
