Title
A Small Mammal Survey of the Vermilion Ecological Study Area
Description
A small mammal survey was conducted at the Vermilion Ecological Study Area from 1-June to 13-August, 1987. Snap, live, and pitfall traps were placed in each of three habitat types: dunes; woods; and wetlands. Three trapping periods were made and total of 1426 trapnights were accumulated. Nine species of small mammals were found at Vermilion. The meadow jumping mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus) and the masked shrew (Sorex cinereus) accounted for 66 of the 99 mammals captured. Pitfall traps were the most effective trap type, accounting for 47% of the mammals captured. The wetlands was the most productive habitat type with 71% of the mammals being taken in this habitat.
