Title

Nesting Ecology of Some Birds in Port Huron, Michigan

Description

The study was conducted on 11.7 acres in Port Huron, St. Clair County, Michigan. The objectives were to determine which avian species were present in the area, which were nesting, and to compare the nest locations with the literature descriptions. The area consisted of five major vegetation types: short, cut grass (46%), deciduous woods and scattered trees of various sizes (30%), pine plantation (11%), short grass, herbs and shrubs (6%), and purple loosestrife (1.8%). Other vegetation types of less than 1% each were: long marsh grass, staghorn sumac, pussy willow, red raspberry, and vegetable gardens. Non-vegetative types were: gravel, water as ponds, buildings, and birdhouses. There were 32 species present (Appendix I), 17 were found to be nesting. The nests were located by sighting singing males, sighting males and/or females entering or leaving the nest, the presence of young, and by detection with a dog. All nests may not have been found. The lack of nesting in the area by a species does not mean that the species has not or will not nest there. The nest locations agreed with out exception to the literature description.
