Title

Electornmicrographic Study of the Morphological Malformations Caused By Benzoyl Ureas Upon the Eastern Spruce Budworm

Description

The scope of this project was to generate and document the morphological malformations caused by either of two benzoyl ureas (Dimilin and UC 62644), upon the fourth, fifth, and sixth instars of-the eastern Spruce budworm (Choristonurea fumiferana (Clemens)). As can be seen in the electron micrographs that follow, the most striking and prominent malformation documented here are the often misplaced and/ or misformed mandibles. Less obvious, was that the crochets of the prolegs appeared to be more sparse - that is - fewer in number. Unfortunately, due to technical difftculties, the third malformation noted, but not photographed, was the thinning of the thorasic shield. Lastly, there was noted a number of budworms with growths on the middle and posterior portions of the body.
