Title
Vegetational Changes from 1845 to 1986 Within a Portion of Chippewa County, MI
Description
"An area of 36,480 acres {14,774 ha) within Chippewa Co., Michigan was examined to determine the changes in forest distribution over 141 years. The distribution and amount of forested land was determined with; survey notes
{1845), Department of Conservation land economicfsurvey maps {1926), Black and White aerial photographs {1939, 1986), and ground truthing {1988). After the percentage of forested land and nonforested land was calculated the general trends appeared to be; large deforestation between 1845 and 1926, slightly more deforestation from 1926-1939, and agricultural abandonment from 1939-1986. The large deforestation is thought to have occurred because of farming, and the current trend of agricultural abandonment is causing an increase in herbaceous and pole sized forest cover. "
