Title

Incidence of Chlamydia and Gonorrhea in Chippewa County, MI and Algoma, ON

Description

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) have been a consistently growing problem globally. The two most common STDs are chlamydia and gonorrhea, and incidence rates of both were studied between the District of Algoma in Ontario Canada, and Chippewa County, Michigan in the United States. Though the areas are demographically different, the St. Mary’s River with the international bridge only separates them. The objective of this study was to observe trends and peaks relating to the incidence of gonorrhea and chlamydia-based infections between the Algoma District and Chippewa County between 2002 and 2011. The highest peak for Algoma was in 2009 with 3.5 infected individuals per 1,000. The highest peak for Chippewa was in 2011 with 2.5 individuals per 1,000. The average age of infection for chlamydia within the Algoma District showed an overall increase from 21.88 years old in 2002, to 24.46 years old in 2011, while Chippewa County also showed a slight increase from 22.1 years old in 2005 to 22.4 years old in 2011. Epidemiological studies such as this not only aid in discovering new trends and patterns from known data, but can also help to create management actions to further reduce the incidence of these STDs.
