Title

2012 Cedar Creek Environmental Restoration and Erosion Control Project

Description

The Cedar Creek motorsport trail is one of the busiest trail systems within the Baldwin-White Cloud Ranger District of the Manistee National Forest. This is due mostly to its close proximity to the large population centers of Muskegon and Grand Rapids, MI. The heavy use that this trail system receives is accompanied by illegal use in the area, by both licensed and unlicensed vehicles operating on forest roads and off road, causing resource damage. The Cedar Creek area was the focus of a 2009 grant that inventoried the ORV damage in the area. From this work, four restoration areas were identified. Two of these locations were accessible directly from the Cedar Creek motorsport trail, and two were accessible via illegally created roads. The extensive use of ORVs in these areas led to severe erosion on hillsides, which had the potential to create sedimentation problems in nearby Cedar Creek. The project that was completed sought to remedy the erosion problems within the project area, and return the wildlife habitat in the area to its more natural state.
