Title
Challenges in Mobilizing Volunteers in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan
Description
"Currently, there is a considerable lack of participation in conservation projects by local community members. This may partially stem from ineffective communication between the conservation community and the general public. The purpose of this study was to attain public participation in conservation efforts at Ashmun Creek in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Various communication channels in coordination with the Chippewa/Luce/Mackinac Conservation District were utilized to encourage volunteer involvement at an Ashmun Creek cleanup. This event served to assess the challenges associated with gaining local community member participation in conservation projects. With the assistance of a small number of volunteers, it helped in reducing the amount of trash located on the banks of Ashmun Creek and improved the aesthetic beauty of the surrounding area. The Ashmun Creek cleanup implementation methods can be applied to other local cleanup events while the communication approaches utilized to encourage volunteer involvement must be adjusted to become completely effective."
