Title

Feeding Pattern and Survival of Purple Martins (Progne subis) Nestlings

Description

"Purple Martins (Progne subis) are aerial insectivores that migrate to breed in North America. We examined the feeding and diet of Purple Martin nestlings. The use of a motion sensor camera was used to capture footage of parents visiting the nesting compartment. Food that was large enough to see on the camera was identified. Many of the identified insects were Odonata (damselflies and dragonflies). Percentage of this main food item was compared to other food items throughout the nesting period. An increasing trend of Odonata is seen over the nesting period suggest an importance of specific food for nestling survival."
