Foraging Differences Between Male and Female Piping Plovers

Title

Foraging Differences Between Male and Female Piping Plovers

Description

Data was collected along the Lake Superior Shore between May and October 1986 from Piping Plovers (Charadrius melodus) of Known sex, to determine their foraging patterns and strategies. Statistical analysis of the data revealed that male Piping Plovers traveled significantly faster than the females. Female Piping Plovers tended to peck and move more per meter than the males. This difference is thought to decrease intraspecific competition. Males and females seem to display different foraging approaches in the shore and the backbeach.
